Here at Wheeler Jewelry, we find the Glacier Blue Topaz to represent all that our area of Northwestern Montana has to offer, from our endless bright blue skyline to the deep inviting blue lakes that are scattered throughout the mountains. “Glacier Blue” is a brand name for a treated colorless topaz owned by Signity Gems, the subsidiary of Swarovski AG in Austria. While many think that treated topaz is aqua-colored, it can in reality range anywhere from mint to Windex blue. We began carrying Glacier Blue topaz in 2003 after the owner, Lisa Poler, spotted them at the Tucson gem show. This new variety of treated topaz is surface colored by the interaction of cobalt oxide with heat in a furnace. Glacier Blue takes topaz into a new realm of corundum colors with shades that remind some of fine Kashmir and Burma sapphire. With a hardness of 8, this is one of the most hassle-free and affordable ways to start a wardrobe of colored stone jewelry.
